When fog covers your snorkel mask, it ruins the experience of diving or swimming. It destroys your view of any marine life as well as disrupts your communication with other divers. But there is good news. There are ways to defog your snorkel mask. But depending on whether your masks are new or used, the approach to make it fog-free become different.

Keep Fog Away From New Snorkel Mask

The new masks have some manufacturing residue left-over on the lens. To stop fogging, remove the residue coating first from inside of your mask lens. Otherwise, it will continue to fog even after using defogging agents.

1. Toothpaste Trick

Apply toothpaste in the inside of your snorkel mask lens. Rub the paste thoroughly over the lens with a light cloth or your fingers for shortly. You just need a simple toothpaste, not one with bleaching agent and confetti. Leave the toothpaste on your mask overnight for the chemicals to react. Don’t use a rough cloth or harsh toothpaste.

2. Flame Trick

At the inside part of your lens run a flaming tip, until the mask-glass turns black. The flame burns the residue that creates fog. A tapered candle or lighter works great for the trick.

After the lens turns black, let it cool down. Next, wipe the soot with a soft piece of cloth. Repeat the process at least for 2-3 times until it becomes difficult to turn the lens black. Don’t let the glass become too hot. If your mask has plastic lenses, then forget this trick. Go for toothpaste. Make sure the hit doesn’t reach the silicon skirt.

Used Snorkel Mask And Keeping Fogs Away

You must defog your glasses with a defogging agent before your dive. Your mask may still get fog after applying the defogging agent. It means there are still some left-over residues from the manufacturing process. You can try previously mentioned tricks.

1. Apply Your Saliva

You can spit inside the mask over the lens. After that, rub it well with your fingers. Dunk your mask from few minutes in fresh water. A saliva layer will stay inside the glass. However, this method doesn’t do well if your mask gets dry before your dive. You have to apply it just before diving.

2. Baby Shampoo

Water-down baby shampoo works well to defog. Rub a few drops of baby shampoo over the mask lens. Then rinse out briefly to keep your mask from fogging. Baby shampoos are better than normal shampoos as it is less irritating for your eyes and also biodegradable.

4. Potatoes

You can rub a cut potato in the inside of your snorkel mask lens for defogging. You can rub it on the glass, rinse shortly after and for your dive. If there is a potato and you can cut it on the go, do try the method.
